COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES

Area agencies on aging, a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration on Aging, were established under the Older Americans Act of 1973 to respond to the needs of Americans aged 60 and over in every local community. The services available through Area Agencies on Aging fall into five broad categories: information and referral/access services; community-based services; in home services including Meals on Wheels; and housing and elder rights including the Ombudsman Program. Within each category a range of programs is available. The program is administered on a state-by-state basis. To find the Area Agency on Aging office that serves your parent’s county, visit Eldercare Locator, www.eldercare.gov, or call toll free 1-800-677-1116, weekdays, 9:00am to 8:00pm (ET). From Outside the USA dial Spherix at
1-301-419-3900. When the operator answers - ask for the Eldercare Locator line.
