Navigating Eldercare Challenges from Abroad

Each family’s parent care challenges are unique – shaped by a parent’s physical, mental and emotional condition and by family dynamics and circumstances. Examples below are common challenges. When a warning flag calls you to parent care action, you might find yourself faced with one of these. For each example of a “challenge”, the “care manager solution” describes how a geriatric care manager can help.

Because a care manager is uninvolved in the family dynamic, he or she can be an effective facilitator of communication between elders and their children and between siblings. Your parents may even come to confide in the care manager, expressing feelings and fears they are uncomfortable discussing with their children. With the help of a care manager, coming together around care of a parent can be a healing experience for families split apart by old resentments and anger.

Family discord

Your parents’ declining ability to care for themselves has unleashed old resentments and anger. Strong feelings are getting in the way of communication between you and your parents and siblings. Discussions about parent care are fraught with emotion and decisions are all but impossible.
